How long does it take for the seeds to be ready once you see the carrot starting to flower? I have one that has it's 1st flower up now & was wondering how long I needed to keep it going before the seeds are ready to harvest. Do I have enough time before the frost/below freezing temps arrive?
Does anyone know which Ontario weigh offs have a heavy carrot as a category all on it's own? It would be nice to know, as it is the GVGO featured other vegetable & it would help our growers know which weigh offs to take their carrots to. I'm sure there will be quite a few carrots out there. Hopefully someone can break the Canadian record, if not the WR. Good luck to my fellow carrot growers.
Thanks in advance.

I think you pretty much have to dig a carrot up and over winter it and then plant it again in the spring to get seeds.
I kept mine too that was going to seed to see what happens. I was hoping for seed too. oh well.
Thanks Brad. That will save me from saving any carrots until they go to seed.
They say that carrot seed gathered in its first year is no good. I don't think you will have enough time either. Carrot seed is usually harvested in the second year where it takes a few months to form (usually finished around August), but they are a bummer to save that long without rotting away. If you have any other carrots (wild or cultivated) in the area that are also flowering, your seed will probably not all be what you were aiming for.
Now back to my 1st question. How long does it take for a carrot to produce viable seeds, once the flowers 1st start to appear? We have 3 carrots going to flower & would like to see if we can get some fresh seeds for the GVGO seed pack.
Thanks guys. I think Woodbridge is also having one.
Good luck all.

The Wellington weigh-off will also have a heavy carrot class this year.
