Title: The GVGO's Great Canadian 1-Ton Challenge
Post by: phunt on December 22, 2015, 02:29:29 PM
Dear Fellow Canadian GVGO members

Seeing that the 1 Ton mark has been surpassed in Europe & the US, it's now time to see who can be the 1st person to break the 2,000 mark here in Canada. Here below are the details to the GVGO's largest contest of all time.

The GVGO's Great Canadian 1-Ton Challenge

- open to All Canadians across this great country

- 2016 Canadian GVGO membership is required

- pumpkin must be weighed at a Canadian official GPC sanctioned weigh off

-
- prize will be $5,000 for the 1st person or in case there are 2 weighed in over 2,000# in 2016, then the largest of the 2 will win the money.

- if no Canadians grow a 2,000# pumpkin in 2016, then there will be another $500 added to the prize each year until it's won

- Winner must donate up to 50% of the seeds (depending on the amount available) & make the pumpkin or images available to the main sponsor for their advertising needs to qualify for the prize money .

More details are being worked out at this time. The GVGO is sponsoring this challenge at this time, but are actively looking for a partner & major sponsor. If you can help, please email us at gvgo@i-zoom.net or gvgo@outlook.com

If you have any comments or suggestion, please email us at gvgo@outlook.com or gvgo@i-zoom.net  Thank you.

We wish all our fellow members & potential new members all the best in 2016.

Cheers,

Phil Joynson - Pres

Phil & Jane Hunt - Treasurer & GVGO Executive

With this challenge, our goal is to introduce & promote our sport/hobby to all Canadians & their families. If you haven't noticed our core members (weigh 2 or more pumpkins each year & members who consistently grow over 1200#) of the GVGO have dropped considerably. We are also about to lose 6 or 7 older growers in the next 4-5 years. These are also core members who will be sorely missed. There are also currently younger retired growers that we're hoping to maybe entice into starting to growing again. Because of these things, we need to do something to jumpstart & promote our sport here in Canada not only to other pumpkin growers, but to as many Canadian gardeners, landscapers, farmers & everyday homeowners as we can & the $5,000 top prize money we're offering might just be enough for some to take up the sport, join the club & get into the action. We really want to promote this all across Canada & get as many people involved as possible.

Now that the membership is informed of the challenge, you have the next 4 months to get your patch ready for the big season. We wish you all the best in 2016.

Merry Christmas & happy New Year.

Cheers,
Jane & Phil

Great idea!!. Is the grower responsible to transport the winning pumpkin to the location of the main sponsor??

As of now, the GVGO is the main sponsor & we as a club don't really need much other than a few pictures for the press & the GVGO newsletter, article on how it was grown & a % of seeds to use as a fundraising tool for the GVGO.

If we do get a sponsor, we will hopefully get a nation-wide company that will either help cover the costs of shipping the pumpkin to their location or have a local representative of their business be available to come to the grower's location & do any publicity shots, interviews or anything else that's needed by the sponsor. Several options, but remember you must be a member of the GVGO in good standing, make the winning pumpkin available to the sponsor & be willing to donate up to 50% of the seeds to the GVGO to be eligible to win the cash.

There are still a few smaller details to be worked out & we're really not sure what a future sponsor might want to request, so those details will be worked out between the sponsor & the GVGO & will be announced ASAP after the sponsor has been signed up. The GVGO will keep you all informed of our progress & of any potential sponsors.

I hope this answers your question & you join us for an exciting season in 2016. All the best next season.

Cheers,
Jane & Phil

There will be a couple changes to the contest that our Canadian growers might be interested.

1. The GVGO will be the main sponsor of the Challenge & the previous rules listed above are still in place.

2. The Prize amount is $5,000 for the 1st 2,000# pumpkin grown in Canada by a Canadian. We will add another $500 to that if it's grown off a GVGO seed.

3. Winner must donate up to 50% of their seeds (depending on seed count) to the GVGO to claim prize.

4. There is a new contest added that will run hand in hand with the 1 Ton Challenge. The largest Increase over Your Previous PB Contest will run each year until the 1st 2,000# pumpkin is weighed it. It is for all current Canadian growers & the rules are pretty simple. This could turn into a yearly contest if our members like it.

a. You must be a Canadian GVGO member in 2016 to qualify. It doesn't matter if you were a GVGO member in 2015, as long your a member in 2016.

b. Prize for the largest increase over your previous PB will win $800. It will increase to $1,000 if it's grown off a GVGO seed.

c. Grower will donate up to 50% of their seeds (depending on seed count) to the GVGO.

d. Winner must CONTACT US to prove their win by providing details of where & when you grew your previous PB.

e. Pumpkins must be weighed at reputable sites & adhere to GPC rules for both contests.

5. Jane & Phil Hunt will not qualify for the 1-Ton challenge as we are the Challenge Coordinators.

6. Winner of the 1-Ton Challenge cannot qualify for the Heaviest over your previous PB contest.

7. Deadline for joining for 2016 will be June 1st

We Challenge all Canadian growers will join the GVGO & Take the 1-Ton Challenge & win up to $5,500.

Good luck to all our fellow Canadian growers,

Cheers,
Jane & Phil Hunt

Thanks Dave. I'm sure we'll look back at this in a few years & say that the Challenge really brought more attention & participation in our beloved sport/hobby across Canada. I would also like to think that ALL of our Canadian growers rose to the Challenge by growing a new PB every year the Challenge is running. That's my hopes anyway.

To our fellow Canadian growers, don't miss out on the largest prize money ever offered in Canada for a GVGO sponsored event. $5 G's for the 1st 2,000#  pumpkin (+$500 if grown on a GVGO seed).

By the way, the winner does not have to ship their pumpkin anywhere, but to their local GPC weigh off to be weighed. I hope that clears up that misconception.

Thanks,
Jane & Phil

Dear fellow Canadian AGP growers

To qualify to enter into the 1-Ton Challenge ($5,000 prize money), all you need to do is join or renew your GVGO membership (@ $30) for the 2016 growing season. No need to register for it, if your already a GVGO member.

Good luck to all our fellow Canadian growers.

Cheers,
Jane & Phil

Hello Phil & Jane.  I see no reason why you would not be entitled to reap the rewards of this contest should you be the first to grow a 1 ton pumpkin.  You both have given so much to the Pumpkin Growing Community.  How ridiculous it would be for you to grow the first or only 1 ton pumpkin and the prize remain unclaimed.  You have my vote for your inclusion in this contest.

I agree with PWB. Jane & Phil should be eligible, the same rules should apply to all Canadian members.

Hi All

Thank you very much for supporting Jane & I. Your kind words are gratefully appreciated by us both.

After working hard to get the challenge started, it was clear that we needed to have a couple people running it that are not eligible to win, so they can make important non-biased decisions if needed. Seeing the Challenge was our idea in the 1st place, we felt that it would be best if we stepped up to take on this role.

If Jane & I or any non GVGO Canadian grower happen to grow the 1st 2,000#er, then the GVGO gets to keep the $5,000 & the contest is over.

To all those Canadian Growers that haven't signed up, there is still time to join & qualify to win the 5,000. June 1st is the deadline. Don't forget all Canadian GVGO members also qualify for the "Largest increase in your PB" Contest.

We wish all Canadian growers good luck. See you at the weigh offs.

Cheers,
Jane & Phil

Hi Phil...Originally you wrote "-- prize will be $5,000 for the 1st person or in case there are 2 weighed in over 2,000# in 2016, then the largest of the 2 will win the money." Does the $5,000 go to the first 2,000lb pumpkin grown in Canada or the largest of 2,000# pumpkins grown in 2016? My apologies if it's just me who is confused.  :)

Hi Peter

The prize of 5Gs will go to the 1st grower to break the 1-Ton barrier, unless there is more than 1 grower who grows a 2,000#+ pumpkin in 2016. If that happens (which I highly doubt it will), then the money will go to the grower with the heaviest pumpkin over 2,000#.  I hope this helps explain it better.

All the best this season.

Cheers,
Jane & Phil

With only 1 main GPC weigh off left in Canada, it looks like there might be at least one GVGO Canadian grower who might be able to give the 2,000# a run & win the $5,000 prize.

Good luck at Wellington Ryan.

Any Canadian GVGOer that had a big increase in their new PB over their previous PB should contact the GVGO with your numbers to claim the $800 prize ($1,000 if grown from a GVGO seed). Both pumpkins (new & old PBs) should have been weighed at GPC sites. So far we have one grower with an increase of 300#. If you have a larger increase in your PB, then contact us with your numbers.
IMPORTANT: The GVGO will not be responsible for looking up everyone's numbers. The growers themselves are responsible for submitting their own information to the GVGO to be eligible to win this prize. Submission deadline is Dec 15th/2016. After that date, the grower who has submitted & proved the largest increase in their PB weights will win the cash prize.

All cash prizes are awarded at the GVGO Spring Seminar in early April 2017.

Cheers,
Jane & Phil
